Defense mechanisms

Avoidance of the issue is a way for the victim of a trauma to mentally surpass the tense moments by pretending nothing has happened. “High anxiety or tension, also known as stress, is common in cross cultural experiences due to the number of uncertainties present.” (Barna, 1994) “Moderate tension and positive attitudes prepare one to meet challenges with energy. Too much anxiety or tension require some form of relief, which too often comes in the form of defenses, such as the skewing of perceptions, withdraw, or hostility.” (Barna, 1994) When dealing with defenses in newly affected people it is important to understand that their emotions are drastic and rash and often times negative.
